“Come on, Ghir, school’s coming up and you suck at math.” The girl with the short, midnight blue hair, the one that finally seems to be smiling once more, tells as boy as she sits on her bed beside him.
“I don’t suck at it, you’re just really good. Besides, I’ve told you, my mind works better with language.” The boy with the long, ragged brown bangs argues calmly as he lies back on the bed, his hands under his head, staring up at the ceiling.

Sometimes when he leaves, I hear a cry coming from the woods or a crash of something being destroyed. It scares me when he’s not with me. I pray each night that Dad will hurry because we’re running out of time.
I keep Mom thinking I’m at the river for three more days, which is just enough time for me to heal well and be able to blame the marks on falling out of the float into rapids. Of course, she’s concerned, and gives me that you-should-have-been-more-careful speech. Still, it’s much better than telling her the truth.
A day or so after I’m well enough to walk without much pain, I go back to Mom’s
